One of India's most famous social reformers, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was known as the architect of modern India. He is revered for his encyclopedic knowledge and prolific scholarship in jurisprudence, economics, sociology, philosophy and religion. His life has been compared to that of Mahatma Gandhi's. Dr. Ambedkar is credited with having written more than 30 books during his lifetime on topics ranging from law to freedom struggle to caste discrimination against the untouchables (Dalits) in India.Dr. Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891 in Mhow, India. He was the 14th and last child of his father, Ramji Maloji Sakpal. Dr. Ambedkar became a professor of economics at Sydenham College in Mumbai, India after graduating from Elphinstone High School. He gained a reputation for his scholarship by completing his doctoral thesis titled "Ancient Indian Commerce" at University College London in 1913. After completing his education, he began to advocate for rights for untouchables (Dalits), who were considered outside of the Hindu caste system because they were members of the lowest classes in Indian society.Ambedkar started by organizing various protests against discrimination faced by Dalits. He was arrested eight times and served jail terms. In 1929, he began to develop the doctrine of Buddhism for Dalits and established an organization named "Samastha Shilpa Shabad" (Association for Promoting Buddhism among Untouchables). He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1931. He used his award money to start a newspaper called "Jnanpith".In 1936, after much campaigning and protests, Dr. Ambedkar founded the Independent Labour Party (ILP), which later became a constituent of the Indian National Congress, a party dominated by upper-caste Hindus. In October 1949 at Nagpur Convention, Dr. Ambedkar announced his plan to draft a new constitution for India. It was called the "Lokasabha Constitution" and based on adult franchise, social and economic justice, opportunities promised to all citizens, equality of status and of opportunity. In August 1950, Dr. Ambedkar first converted to Buddhism along with a few hundred thousand of his followers in a ceremony at Nagpur. He then resigned from the Indian National Congress party and next year the Constituent Assembly ratified his draft constitution as the Constitution of Independent India. Dr. Ambedkar took a historic oath as Law Minister in 1952 under  Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's Prime Ministership. He was the Law Minister in the First Cabinet of Independent India and served as Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee. He also served as India's representative to UNESCO and Ambassador to the Soviet Union. In 1956, he was elected to the upper house of Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha and in 1957 he founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a political party for all people regardless of caste and creed.He was awarded Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award in 1990 for social justice. Dr. Ambedkar died on December 6, 1956 at his home in Delhi due to heart failure at age 64. Today October 14 is celebrated as "Ambedkar Jayanti" across India to remember his achievements .
